Mental Health Awareness Week is an annual event, which takes place between 10th – 16th May. During this event, everyone in the UK focuses on having good mental health, and this was started by the Mental Health Foundation 21 years ago. The event is open to everyone, and the focus is to encourage people to discuss mental health and the things in our daily lives that affect it.
Our mental health can be affected by our social, psychological or emotional well-being. It also determines how we are affected by stress, and how we deal with it. However, there are also other factors which can contribute to your mental health, these are things such as:
- Life experiences, such as abuse or trauma
- Family history of mental health problems
- Biological factors such as genes or brain chemistry
There are several early warning signs, which may be apparent to yourself, or those around you. Experiencing one or more of the following could be a sign of mental health problems:
- Sleeping or eating too much, or too little
- Avoiding social activities
- Low energy, feeling numb or unmotivated
- Feeling helpless or hopeless
- Confused, forgetful, on edge, worried, upset, scared, or angry
- Hearing voices or overthinking
- Inability to perform your daily tasks, like house cleaning, going for walks, or taking the kids to school
- Severe mood swings
However, there are also good signs of mental health, which allows people to:
- Work productively
- Realise and acknowledge their full potential
- Cope with stress
- Connect with others
There are ways to maintain a positive mental health mindset, which may include:
- Being physically active
- Getting enough sleep
- Helping others
- Taking up a hobby
- Seeking professional help if required
Here at BVS Training, we offer in-depth video training courses on mental health, dementia and learning disabilities. These include a DVD, Lesson Plans, Handouts, Assessment Quizzes, and Certification, which are endorsed by Skills for Care. Below are courses we offer:
Mental Capacity – This title explains the Mental Capacity Act 2005, and how it affects everybody who works in care. It will give the care worker a clear understanding on what the Mental Capacity Act is, and how they can apply it to their day-to-date work as it is vital.
Dementia Care 1: Understanding Dementia – This video focuses on the physical condition of dementia, and how it can affect a person. It covers all the stereotypes and how it impacts the quality of care given.
Dementia Care 2: Person Centred Dementia Care – This video introduces the person centred qualities that a skilled care worker should be able to provide in their day-to-day work. It also explains, and showcases, how person centred qualities can improve a carer’s ability to provide positive and supportive dementia care.
